5 seasons, 1 feature film and 500,000,000+ views later, Dick Figures remains a cult hit from the internet’s golden age of animation.
After the pilot A Bee or Something launched in 2010, the web series became an instant hit. It quickly grew a diverse and loyal fanbase, and soon became the #1 most-viewed animated series on YouTube.
FOR THE FANS, BY THE FANS
Dick Figures: The Movie launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise financing. The campaign raised $314,411 and broke the record for the most money raised for an animated project.
The 73-minute feature was produced at Six Point Harness with a small team in less than a year. To celebrate the monumental fan support that brought the project to life, Dick Figures: The Movie was released for free on YouTube in chapters, with an option to purchase the entire film from Mondo Media’s website.
The unconventional release model paid off. Fans were more engaged than ever and Six Point Harness made their money back in three weeks.
YouTube dubbed the successful strategy the Dick Figures model.
